Our Story

A half-century of Wyoming wilderness

The River Wind House has been a beloved family retreat since 1974, when it was built at the foot of Black Butte in Wyoming's Upper Green River Valley. The house looks out over one of the most unspoiled landscapes in the American West.

The property was chosen for its remarkable setting — a wide-open valley where the Green River winds through sage and meadow, elk gather by the hundreds in winter, and the silence is broken only by birdsong and the sound of the wind. It is, as the family has always said, "a unique and isolated spot in the world, with a minimum of intrusions and an abundance of wildlife that makes the landscape come alive."

Now welcoming guests for the first time, River Wind House offers the rare chance to experience this extraordinary corner of Wyoming exactly as the family has for generations: as a base camp for adventure, a place to slow down, and a genuine refuge.

Directions & Access

Getting to River Wind House

River Wind House is on a rural road in Cora, Wyoming. Plan ahead — cell service and gas stations are limited once you leave the main highway.

Fly into Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) or drive from Casper or Salt Lake City (~3–4 hours).
From Jackson, take US-191 N / US-189 N through Hoback Junction, then US-189 N to Pinedale (~90 min).
From Pinedale, head north on US-191 approximately 25 miles toward Cora.
Turn onto Black Butte Ranch Road. Detailed arrival instructions provided upon booking confirmation.

A Sense of Place

History of the Property

The property at 165 Black Butte Ranch Road was first acquired in 1971, when Bill and Judy Driscoll joined two partners to purchase a portion of a larger 1780-acre holding from the Carney Land Company. Otis Carney — a longtime friend who had summered in the Upper Green River valley for years — was the one who first brought them here. Bill had always been drawn to the West, and this was about as close to the real thing as one could get.

The house itself was built in 1974–75 by a local contractor, set on a glacial bench at the base of Black Butte — a remnant of a Pre-Cambrian block along the fault line that formed the Green River Valley. It has remained essentially unchanged since, a place the family has always agreed is "unique and isolated, with a minimum of intrusions and an abundance of wildlife that makes the landscape come alive."

Now stewarded by the Driscoll River Wind Properties, LLC, the property is shared with guests for the first time — with the same hope that has guided the family for fifty years: that it continue to serve as a destination and refuge for those who find their way here.
